چکیده

Swarms of social insects construct trails and networks of regular tra c via a process of pheromone laying and following These patterns constitute what is known in brain science as a cognitive map The main di erence lies in the fact that the insects write their spatial memories in the environment while the mammalian cognitive map lies inside the brain This analogy can be more than a poetic image and can be further justi ed by a direct comparison with the neu ral processes associated with the construction of cognitive maps in the hippocampus We investigate via analysis and numerical simula tion the formation of trails and networks in a collection of insect like agents The agents interact in simple ways which are determined by experiments with real ants

Cognitive Character Engagement and the Extended Mind in Bahram Tavakkoli’s Wandering in the Fog

The present study has a cognitive approach to empathy and character engagement in cinema. In discussing how through empathy and engagement with real and fictional characters, we extend our minds and enhance our cognitive abilities, the present paper studies Bahram Tavakkoli’s Wandering in the Fog (2010), to show how Andy Clark and David Chalmers’s idea of the extended mind as joined with ...

How Geometrical Descriptors Help to Build Cognitive Maps of Solid Geometry with a 3DOF Tactile Mouse

In this work we study how the kind and number of geometrical descriptors affects the way real objects are matched to virtual 2.5D objects, rendered with a 3DOF tactile mouse. We show that elevation or inclination cues are sufficient to recognize a small tactile dictionary of geometrical solids, but that their combination works at best. We also show that inclination alone may generate confusion ...

Learning and Memory

How do we learn and remember? How do our brains change with experience? Why do we forget? This issue’s Select features recent articles that address these questions. Four studies provide new perspectives on howmolecular changes at individual synapses influence behaviors, supply insight into diseases typified by learning and memory deficits, and highlight how spatial information is integrated to ...

A Tactical Command Approach to Human Control of Vehicle Swarms

Human control of vehicle swarms faces a dilemma: an operator must be able to exercise precise control over how amission is executed, but controlling individual vehicles is not scalable. The Proto spatial computing language offers an intermediate representation, where the motion of a swarm is specified as a vector field, which is then approximated by the movement of individual members (Bachrach,...
